Community Rallies to Adopt and Foster Dogs at Pasadena Humane

A few weeks ago, Pasadena Humane found itself in a difficult situation. With over 100 dogs in their care, nearly every dog kennel was full. The shelter put out an urgent plea on social media, asking the community to temporarily open their homes to a foster dog to free up much-needed space in their kennels.

Thankfully, that call was answered. According to Izzy Nidetz, Director of Placement at Pasadena Humane, “The community really responded. We had a flood of people who reached out about fostering, and we were able to quickly get 21 dogs into short-term foster homes.”

Several of those foster families decided to adopt their foster dogs, which was also a win for the organization. According to Nidetz, one foster mom emailed the day before she was scheduled to bring the dog back to the shelter, saying “I can’t bring this dog back- she was meant to be MY dog!” an incredibly happy outcome for both parties.

In the week following the social media post, 56 dogs found new adoptive homes. Thirty dogs were adopted during a week-long fee-waived promo and 26 dogs during the shelter’s big Free Adoption Day event on October 12.

“Our community’s response has been truly incredible,” said Dia DuVernet, President & CEO of Pasadena Humane. “We are deeply grateful to everyone who stepped up to foster or adopt during this challenging time. It was heartwarming to see so many families open their homes up to dogs in need. We hope more people will continue to foster or adopt—especially our larger dogs, who still need loving homes.”

As the weather cools, Pasadena Humane is starting to see some relief from the busy summer months, which are typically the highest for animal intake. While their population has stabilized, big dogs still make up a large percentage of Pasadena Humane’s available animals. People interested in short-term fostering or adopting a large dog are encouraged to contact the shelter.
