Thank you for your interest in adopting a pet from Pasadena Humane! There are two ways you can adopt a pet: make an appointment or as a walk-in. View our pets for adoption here.
Adoptions are by appointment daily from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Pasadena Humane is open for walk-in adoptions 7 days a week, from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m.
Walk-in adoption hours are canceled on Wednesday, January 8 due to severe weather.
What can I expect when I come to adopt?
You will meet with an adoption counselor who will help match you with a pet that fits your lifestyle. Your adoption counselor will share any medical and behavioral information we have for the pet(s) you are interested in adopting. They’ll also answer any questions you have about caring for a pet. If the pet you want to adopt has already been adopted, our counselors are happy to discuss other available animals.
How can I let my adoption counselor know what type of pet I’m interested in?
You will be sent a questionnaire via email after booking your appointment or after checking in with our staff as a walk-in. Please fill out this questionnaire so we can learn more about you and the pet you’re looking for.
Who should come with me when I adopt? Should I bring resident pets with me?
Although it’s not required, we recommend that all humans in your household come with you when you adopt. However, we do not offer meet-and-greets between pets, so please leave your resident pets at home. The shelter environment is usually not indicative of how animals will get along in the home. Our adoption counselors will be happy to give you detailed information on how to successfully introduce your new pet to your resident pets.
What should I bring with me to my appointment or walk-in adoption?
Please bring a valid ID and a form of payment (cash, credit card, or check).
Please also bring a carrier or collar/harness and leash for your new pet. If you do not have these items, they can be purchased at our Shelter Shop at the corner of Raymond and Del Mar.
Can I take my new pet home the same day?
Please be prepared to take your new pet home the same day. However, some animals may need to be picked up at a later date if they are not yet spayed or neutered.
Can I still see the animals if I don’t want to adopt?
Please stop by during our Visiting Hours (Saturday and Sunday, 2-5 p.m.) to walk through our dog kennels, Neely Cat Center, and Critter House.
Are all animals for adoption located at your shelter?
Most of our adoptable pets are located at our main animal shelter at 361 S. Raymond Ave, Pasadena, CA 91105. We also have cats available for adoption at Pet Food Express in Pasadena and PetSmart in Tujunga. And we have mobile adoption events at different locations in the community most weekends.
Some of our adoptable animals are currently in foster homes. A pet in a foster home will have the kennel #FOSTER on their online profile. If you are interested in adopting a pet in foster, our adoption counselors can help arrange a meet and greet.
I didn’t find my new pet at Pasadena Humane. Are there any other pets in need of homes?
There are thousands of animals looking for new homes across the Los Angeles area. Please consider visiting another local shelter such as San Gabriel Valley Humane Society or shelters run by LA Animal Services and LA County Animal Care & Control.
We also host a Private Rehoming page for animals being rehomed by members of our community. These pets are not housed at Pasadena Humane and all arrangements to meet with them must be made directly with their guardians.
OTHER FEES VARY BY ANIMAL
* California law requires every dog over four months old to be vaccinated against rabies and licensed. Dogs adopted in our licensing service cities will be licensed for an additional fee on their adoption day. Cats adopted to Bradbury residents must pay for a cat license. License fees vary by city.
Our Seniors for Seniors program enables people age 60 and up to adopt pets age 5 and up free of charge, thanks to the generous support of the Pets for the Elderly Foundation.
Of course, most pets at age 5 (like most humans at age 60!) are hardly over the hill; on the contrary, they’re just hitting their stride, and the Seniors for Seniors program—besides offering financial assistance to our more experienced adopters—gives an extra boost to the terrific middle-aged cats and dogs, who are sometimes overlooked by shelter visitors.
We offer fee-waived adoptions for all active duty and retired military personnel. Adopters must show military ID at time of adoption to qualify. Pets for Veterans benefit is not transferrable to other parties. Adopter with military ID must be the person finalizing adoption paperwork and signing adoption agreement. Some restrictions may apply.
