Licensing pets in Pasadena is now easier, modernized, and more valuable for all pet owners. Pasadena Humane is delighted to launch a partnership with DocuPet, a world-leading pet profile, lost pet, and licensing platform. Pet owners will now receive a complimentary lost pet service, along with colorful, unique designer ID tags linked to a secure online profile when they license their pets.
California law requires every dog over four months old to be vaccinated against rabies and licensed. All dogs in our licensing service cities must have a current license and comply with the law to utilize Pasadena Humane services.

What is a pet license?
A pet license is an additional form of ID that indicates your pet has been registered with your city and vaccinated against rabies. All dogs age 4 months and older are required by law to be licensed in California. If you live in Bradbury or Monrovia, you must also license your cat. Pet licenses are issued as ID tags that must be worn on your pet’s collar at all times. Pasadena Humane has partnered with DocuPet to provide an enhanced pet licensing experience by offering a simple online experience, the free HomeSafe™ 24/7 lost pet service, and colorful designer tag options that double as a pet’s official license. This new service will improve the convenience of pet licensing, result in increased automation, improve customer service and support the animals here at Pasadena Humane.
How does licensing benefit my pet?
A license tag greatly improves the chance that your dog (or cat) will be returned home if they get lost. When you purchase a license, your pet is assigned a unique ID number that links to you as the owner. Better yet, if one of our animal control officers picks up your licensed dog (or cat) as a stray, they may be able to return the pet directly to your door. Each official Pasadena Humane license tag is now equipped with DocuPet’s HomeSafe™ 24/7 lost pet service, which includes a dedicated dispatch team working around the clock to locate and reunite lost pets. When lost pets end up in shelters, those with license tags get home faster, opening up shelter space for the animals that truly need it. License fees also help support critical community initiatives.
What are the requirements to license my pet?
The law requires that pets are up to date on their rabies vaccine. You must submit the proof of rabies vaccination along with your license application form. Additionally, license fees are discounted for pets that are spayed/neutered (proof required.) Pasadena Humane offers low-cost spay/neuter for dogs and cats.
Some cities offer additional discounts for seniors and low-income individuals. Please check your city’s license application for guidelines.
My dog/cat can’t get a rabies vaccine. What do I do?
Unfortunately, Pasadena Humane cannot grant rabies waivers. City of Pasadena residents must contact the Pasadena Department of Public Health at 626.744.6000. Residents of all other cities must call the Department of Public Health for the County of Los Angeles at 213.989.7060.

Purchase or Renew a Pet License
To purchase your pet license, create your secure online profile at pasadenahumane.docupet.com. Residents may also license by phone, or by submitting proof of current rabies vaccination, license application form, and payment by mail. If your pet is spayed/neutered, please be sure to submit proof of sterilization for a significant discount! Completed applications and documentation may also be dropped off in person at the Shelter Shop during regular business hours.

Pet license tags are permanent and will not be reissued unless the tag is lost or damaged. You will not receive a new tag when you renew your pet’s license.
Arcadia, La Cañada Flintridge and San Marino dog licenses can also be purchased at City Hall.
Pasadena Residents: Pasadena Municipal Code Section 6.09.010 mandates that all dogs and cats be spayed or neutered unless exempted under the City Ordinance.

Los Angeles County Pet License Update
Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care and Control (DACC) is now processing all new and renewal pet licenses for all unincorporated Los Angeles County areas, including unincorporated Altadena, La Crescenta-Montrose, Monrovia, and East Pasadena/San Pasqual & Kinneloa Mesa (zip codes 91001, 91104, 91107, 91214, 91020, 91011, and 91107). DACC will honor all current animal licenses, but all future renewals and new animal license payments should be made to DACC. Please note that while Pasadena Humane will no longer be providing these licensing services, we will continue to provide animal sheltering and field services to these areas.
