Using a plastic storage bin is a great, cost-effective way to give your hamster ample space. For an in-depth video guide, scan the QR code at the bottom of the page for a video from MunchiesPlace on Youtube that you can follow along to make the cage.
Supplies Needed:
- 40-75 gallon clear plastic storage bin
- Ruler or tape measure
- Razor or saw
- Drill
- Gloves for safety
- Zip ties or staple gun
- Marker
- Sand paper
- Chicken wire or window screen (enough to cover lid of bin)
- Wire cutters
Step by Step:
- Follow the video with the QR link with all of your supplies available.
- On your lid, use your ruler or tape measure to draw a 1 to 2-inch border from the edge.
- On a safe surface like cardboard, use your razor to cut along the line. If available, using a heat gun to soften the plastic can make this process easier, but it is not necessary.
- Once the hole is cut out of the lid, sand down the rough edges of the plastic to keep your hamster safe from sharp plastic.
- Using your cut lid as a template, cut the chicken wire or window screen to be slightly bigger than the hole you cut in step 2. You want enough extra to secure the screen on all sides.
- If using zip ties, use a drill to make holes in the lid, 2 inches apart. Use zip ties to affix chicken wire or window screen.
- If using a staple gun, staple the screen or chicken wire every 2 inches around the border to cover the hole.
That’s it! Make sure there are no loose pieces of plastic and all edges are smooth.
Fill your bin with all the bedding and furniture and place the lid on the bin to keep your hamster from finding a way out.
Make sure to leave at least 5-6 inches between the top of the bedding to the top of the bin.
