Collaboration At Its Best

In times of crisis, collaboration can make all the difference for animals in need. Last week, Pasadena Humane joined San Diego Humane Society (SDHS) in responding to a heartbreaking large-scale rescue at Villa Chardonnay in Julian, where hundreds of neglected animals were found living in devastating conditions. Many were suffering from emaciation, contagious diseases, and untreated wounds after enduring prolonged neglect.

More than 25 Pasadena Humane team members—including animal control officers, veterinary staff, and support personnel traveled to San Diego County to assist with the rescue effort. Together with SDHS, they helped safely remove animals from the property, conduct medical evaluations, and transport them to safety. In total, approximately 165 horses remain under SDHS care on-site, while 30 dogs, more than 400 cats, and dozens of livestock were rescued from the property.

The partnership between the two organizations reflects the critical role humane agencies play in supporting one another during emergencies. SDHS previously assisted Pasadena Humane during the Eaton Fire response, and this rescue provided an opportunity to return that support when it was needed most.

To help ease overcrowding caused by the influx of rescued animals, Pasadena Humane also welcomed 19 adoptable cats from San Diego. While these cats were not part of the rescue case itself, transferring them to Pasadena creates more space and resources for SDHS to continue caring for the rescued animals. Pasadena Humane hopes the community will step forward to adopt these cats and support the ongoing rescue effort.
