Pasadena Humane Responds To Largest Small Animal Hoarding Case In Their Recent History, Rescuing Dozens

PASADENA, Calif. (October 30, 2025) Pasadena Humane has taken in an extraordinary number of small pets following a hoarding case in Arcadia. The shelter received 31 mice and 63 hamsters, some of which are pregnant and expected to give birth. The total number of rescued animals is currently 94 but anticipated to exceed 100 in the days to come, making this the largest small animal hoarding case in the organization’s recent history.

Upon their arrival at the shelter, Pasadena Humane’s dedicated team responded quickly, providing necessary veterinary exams, appropriate housing, and ongoing safekeeping of every animal. All have been deemed healthy following their evaluations, with the exception of one hamster who is receiving treatment for scabbing and minor swelling in its left hind leg. The cause of the wound is unknown, but the hamster is expected to make a full and speedy recovery.

Because species like hamsters and mice breed frequently – sometimes producing new litters every few weeks – unseparated pairs can quickly grow into dozens of animals in a short amount of time. “Thankfully, these critters are now safe and receiving the attention they need” said Chris Ramon, the President and CEO of Pasadena Humane. “Now, we’re hoping our community can open their hearts and homes to help us find loving placements for each and every one of them.”

Pasadena Humane encourages the community to adopt these critters, many of which are available now. Small animals can make delightful pets and are a great choice for anyone looking for a tiny companion. To help ensure successful adoptions, Pasadena Humane’s team of adoption counselors are on hand to provide potential adopters with information and guidance on proper critter care. The hamsters and mice are available for an adoption fee of $10 and $15 each, respectively, with a limit of four of the same sex.

Adoptable animals can be viewed online at pasadenahumane.org or by visiting the shelter during adoptions hours.
