Martin, who died last October at age 87, grew up surrounded by natural beauty when her parents moved to the Territory of Hawaii from their native California in the early 1920s. There she attended Punahou School and took courses at the Honolulu Academy of Art. She later majored in art at Mills College and earned a master’s degree in fine arts at the Instituto Allende, in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico.

Martin began teaching at Maunaolu Community College on the island of Maui, where she was befriended by local equestrians who shared their favorite scenic spots. After she moved to California in the late 1950s, she became a high school art teacher in Pasadena.

Martin loved the outdoors and was a devotee of plein air painting. Her favorite subjects were California and Hawaiian landscapes and seascapes and once said “I love the challenge of the play of light with the texture of the land,” a quality evident in her paintings.

Dogs and horses were her constant companions, and her last dog, an Australian Shepherd named Jamie, was adopted from PHS. She was also a member of the Flintridge Riding Club.

Winning bidders will be notified the week of February 19 to make arrangements to receive their paintings. The paintings must be picked up at the Pasadena Humane Society, 361 S. Raymond Avenue, Pasadena, CA, 91105.
