Akira is a gorgeous white Siberialn Husky with some special needs. Her owner was no longer able to care for her, so brought her to Pasadena Humane. In Japanese, the name Akira can translate to “sunshine bright.” Akira is a ray of sunshine in herself since she is friendly and a well-behaved dog that gets along with older kids and even strangers. However, Akira is slowly losing her eyesight due to an untreatable condition. While she has limited vision now in her beautiful blue eyes, she will be eventually blind. Owners of blind dogs report that the dog’s sense of smell and hearing increase proportionally to the loss of sight and these dogs can still get around quite well. In fact, Health Staff reports that Akira softly approaches an unknown object and gently touches it with her nose to get a sense of what it is. This means, she is adapting already to a loss of sight. Owners of blind dogs simply need to be the dog’s eyes while on walks and guide them carefully. Even so, Akira walks well on leash. While Akira can still see some thiings, she has been fitted with a “Halo.” This is not because she’s an angel . . . although one could argue that point due to her personality, but a Halo is a wire bumper that is fitted to a dog’s head so they don’t run into objects. Akira does get along with some dogs her size, but not with small pets. Akira is a bright dog with a sunny personality who needs a very special and loving owner.
